Each October, we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month to honor survivors, those living with metastatic breast cancer, their families, and the medical professionals who treat them.
According to estimates, around 310,720 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. Of those patients, 16% will be women younger than 50 years old.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) explains that incident rates of breast cancer are increasing. Thus, hospitals can use this month as an opportunity to educate and inform women about the importance of regular screenings, helpful resources, and fundraising opportunities to support lifesaving research and initiatives.
Share Free Resources
Knowledge is an extremely powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer. Informing women on how and when they need to be checked supports early detection, which increases a patient’s chances of survival.
This month, supply resources like free pamphlets and brochures in waiting areas, exam rooms, and other common areas. Doing so can help spread awareness and remind patients to schedule mammograms and complete monthly self-breast exams.
It can also be helpful to create online guides or infographics to post on your hospital’s website and social media pages. This can help get your message across to patients and community members who may not have a hospital visit during breast cancer awareness month.
Wear Your Support
This October, you can honor the movement by gearing up with pink medical equipment and scrubs adorned with the iconic ribbon to represent breast cancer awareness. We offer a full range of pink stethoscopes from leading brands Littmann and ADC to show your support for the cause in each patient interaction.
In fact, the ADC 603 Clinician Stethoscope is available in Breast Cancer Awareness Metallic Pink, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society. This stethoscope is one of the most popular acoustic models from ADC, delivering outstanding acoustic performance with highly durable materials and design.
You can equip your medical bag with additional pink equipment for breast cancer awareness month, including the MiniMedicut Shears from ADC. These shears feature a bright pink ribbon motif, with a razor-sharp surgical stainless steel blade and one serrated edge to cut through even the toughest materials. Like the ADC stethoscope, a portion of the proceeds from these shears is donated to the ACS. For workers on the go, we also have a pocket aneroid kit featuring a blood pressure cuff and chrome-plated aneroid in a convenient pink ribbon carrying case.
Host a Fundraiser
You may consider hosting a fundraiser at your hospital to benefit charities that provide education and resources for cancer patients or organizations that invest in research for effective treatments and a cure. Maybe you can sell breast cancer awareness wristbands or hold a raffle for a collection of the ADC breast cancer awareness medical equipment.
If you want to expand your efforts and include the entire community, like survivors and those who have been impacted by breast cancer, you may decide to host a fun run sometime during the month of October. This way, you can bring greater attention to the cause and raise more money for breast cancer education and research.
Regardless of how your hospital chooses to honor breast cancer awareness month, the most important thing is that you’re vocal about the cause and actively promote activities that support those affected by or at risk for breast cancer.
